In her role as Assistant Vice President at the Lincoln Financial Group, Jill Carpenter provides actuarial support to all life pricing teams including pricing model review, actuarial state filing, and quarterly reporting of product profitability. Jill also dedicates her time to interviewing and mentoring actuarial student candidates, and helping to coordinate their development opportunities, perhaps this work is thanks in part to how Jill herself came to the profession.

A Chemistry major and Math minor during her Junior year at the University of Minnesota, Jill first learned of the profession through a seminar held on campus. She was attracted to the fact that being an actuary did not require graduate school and was a field that applied mathematics in the workplace. After learning about the profession, Jill picked up a Math major her senior year, and took her first exam that spring. Shortly thereafter she landed her first job with Northwestern National Life in Minneapolis where she worked as she finished her exams.

As Jill's career progressed she held a variety of positions in the Product and Market Development and Distribution Compensation departments with the Phoenix Life Insurance Company before moving into her current role with the Lincoln Financial Group in 2004. Reflecting on her experiences, Jill notes that it has been interesting for her to work with people within different areas of the company, including Law Department and Compliance, Underwriting, Client Services, and Product Development and Risk Management.

When asked about the future of the actuarial profession, Jill predicts that, "we will continue to see actuaries moving into non-traditional roles such as, pricing or risk management in manufacturing, transportation, or energy companies; the actuarial education and training prepares future actuaries for these new roles."

Jill has served in various roles on Society of Actuaries Education and Examination Committees including her current role as the Module 5 Lead on the Fundamentals of Actuarial Practice (FAP) Education Committee.
