Art Randolph knew what he wanted in a career.

He wanted to find a profession where he was able to build a successful career using his mathematical and technical skills. But, that wasn’t all – he also wanted to work in a business environment where he’d have ample room to grow and build a career.

And, when he went down the list, Art found that the actuarial profession was a perfect match.

Today, as a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, as well as an Associate in Risk Managememnt, Art specializes primarily in medical professional liability and workers' compensation coverages. In his role as a senior consultant with Towers Watson in Atlanta, Georgia, he works with a range of clients from small physician groups and health systems to multi-state professional liability insurance providers.

From conducting traditional reserve reviews to ratemaking studies and providing guidance regarding alternative risk financing vehicles, Art helps his clients with a variety of issues. While he loves the challenge of working on a wide variety of projects, Art says that the most rewarding part of his job stays the same no matter what the assignment – knowing that his clients place considerable reliance on the services he provides. “The ‘trusted advisor’ function is critical to their decision making processes,” said Art.

Art also volunteers his time to speak to minority high school students about the actuarial profession in the Atlanta and Washington D.C. areas as a member of the Joint Committee on Actuarial Diversity sponsored by the Casualty Actuarial Society and the Society of Actuaries. Having applied his skills in a variety of ways and in a variety of specialties – from working as a workers’ compensation actuary at an insurance company to a medical professional liability specialist in a consulting environment – he has many perspectives to share. He considers this opportunity to foster interest in the profession an important role and one of the most gratifying aspects of being a credentialed actuary and risk analyst.

Art knew that the actuarial profession offered him everything he was looking for in a career. So, what does he see as the possibilities for future actuaries? “Given pending legislation that targets the insurance industry and the uncertain ramifications, it is challenging to gain a clear view of the profession’s future direction,” said Art.

However, if he had to guess, he has his ideas, saying, “I have every reason to believe that actuaries will continue to be at the forefront on issues related to the quantification of risk.”
