Vincent Soucy wanted to join a profession that had the reputation of being challenging yet rewarding; and he found what he was looking for when he discovered the actuarial profession. Currently an actuarial consultant for Avalon Actuarial Inc., Vincent handles group insurance, investment, non-traditional risk and risk management-related projects. Vincent thrives on the opportunity to manage and react to challenging situations and enjoys the satisfaction of finding solutions to his clients' complex business problems.
A graduate of Laval University in Québec City, Vincent majored in actuarial science and recollects Financial Mathematics taught by Professor André Prémont as his favorite course. "I enjoyed discovering the power of financial mathematics…I was glad to see all the possible applications it had to real life," explained Vincent.
Vincent encourages aspiring actuaries to strive to build their foundation in actuarial skills while not forgetting about the importance of critical business skills like communication. "Try to get as much competence in the first years of your career as you can," he advises. "But don't forget, what will move you to the next level are mainly your business and interpersonal aptitude."
As for the future of the profession, he says "I hope the actuarial profession will continue to develop in the risk management field, and in the non-traditional roles."
